Associate Veterinarian

Primary Function: Work with a team to oversee and monitor the health of shelter animals and provide veterinary expertise in accordance with the organizational policies and procedures. Perform spay/neuter surgeries daily for the public and shelter. Assist the Executive Director in establishing and maintaining all health related protocols to maximize adoptions and minimize euthanasia. Set a professional and positive example for other staff members.


Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform surgeries from routine spay and neuters to dystocias, dentals to amputations. The position requires efficient spay/neuter technique (25-30 animals per day) and a desire to be part of a team that embraces optimism even on the most challenging days.

  • Keep abreast of developments in the field of veterinary medicine, particularly the most innovative concepts of shelter medicine.

  • Perform evaluations to determine the health of individual animals and/or overall health of the animals at the shelter.

  • Make recommendations on disease control, sanitation, clinic procedures etc.

  • Ensure positive public relations and customer service practices.

 Carry Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • responsibilities in accordance with the shelter’s policies and applicable state and federal laws.

  • Perform other duties as requested.

Job Requirements:

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a degree of Doctor of Veterinary Medicine.

  • Must be licensed to practice veterinary medicine in the State of Texas at start date.

  • Minimum of 1 years experience, such as, prior experience working with companion animals in a clinical, general practice.

  • Maintain a Texas State License in good standing and adequate continuing education.

Physical Requirements:

  • Physical requirements include occasional lifting/carrying of 50 pounds and greater than 50 pounds with assistance; visual acuity, speech and hearing; hand and eye coordination and manual dexterity necessary to operate veterinary tools and instruments. Subject to reaching, standing, handling, walking, climbing, twisting, and sitting to perform the essential functions.

Working conditions:

  • Working Conditions are a kennel environment with frequent exposure to laboratory conditions including hazardous materials, unfavorable fumes and odors, and working with animal body fluids and infectious diseases. Exposure to animal hair and dandruff, possibility of domestic and wild animal bites. May be exposed to potential communicable disease, such as ringworm, rabies, etc. The noise levels range from moderate to high.

  • Knowledge of veterinary medical procedures, techniques, methods, and practices.

  • Knowledge of State, Federal, and local laws and ordinances pertaining to animal control.

  • Knowledge of animal shelter facility functions, to include feeding and sanitation procedures.

  • Knowledge of public health and rabies education procedures.

  • Knowledge of basic supervisory practices, methods, and procedures.

  • Knowledge of animal immunology procedures, techniques, and practices.

  • Knowledge of animal control safety procedures and practices.

  • Knowledge of surgical procedures, methods, practices, and techniques and skill in performing high volume neuter/spay surgeries.

  • Ability to work effectively under stressful situations.

  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with Shelter staff and the general public.

  • Ability to perform veterinary medical examinations on animals and determine if euthanasia is required.

  • Ability to perform all the physical requirements of the position. 

Job Types: Full-time, Part-time, Contract, Temporary

Pay: $72,055.00 - $120,000.00 per year
