The Gift Of Adoption,
there ’s no place like home..
They all have a story behind those eyes to tell. Whether they know their predicament or not. We know this; a shelter animal can, if given a chance, bring untold joy and love to a new family who loves him back. He will give the gifts of friendship and devotion, and will give them unconditionally. He’ll share his own unique spirit and teach his own unique lessons. He will help us remember our connection to other living beings, and show us the way to making that connection loving and respectful.
Honoring these things by adopting a shelter animal is a profound act and expression of compassion, and of the inherent value of animals.
Most importantly, and most basically, it is a happy ending to a shelter animal’s story.....A Home.
Everyone can help America’s homeless animal tragedy

FAQ Back
Q. Why do your adoption fees vary by animal?
A .Several years ago, Gulf Coast Humane Society implemented a variable pricing for our animals. While we don’t see one particular animal as more “valuable” than another (every animal up for adoption is equally wonderful from our perspective), we tend to assign higher adoption fees for our puppies, kittens, and purebred animals to help off-set the cost of care for all our animals. Since there is no time limit on how long an animal can stay in our adoptions program, assigning higher fees to those animals who have a higher chance of getting adopted allows us to not only reduce the adoption fees for those animals who might otherwise be overlooked, but also allows us to offer additional assistance to injured, sick or under-socialized animals that may need a little extra TLC before being placed up for adoption. Also, many animals that come through are in need of extensive or long term medical care. The fee's at GCHS assit us in remaining a True No Kill Facility.
**Please note, regardless of what our adoption fees are, they do not come close to covering all the costs the shelter incurs for caring for over 2,200 animals per year. Financial and in-kind donations provided by generous members of the community (like you) help us supplement the animals’ care. If you have the ability to make an in-kind or financial donation to Gulf Coast Humane Society, please do so. Your support means a lot to us and, of course, the animals we save.
Q. Does GCHS perform cruelty investigations?
A. While GCHS takes call or complaints of animal cruelty VERY seriously , we unfortunately do not investigate animal cruelty. Animal Control can be reached at 826-4630 to file complaints.
Q. Can I bring an animal to drop off?
A. GCHS is currently at critical over capacity. We can only take in animals as space allows. Please call the shelter before bringing an animal in.
Q. Is GCHS affiliated with the Humane Society of the United States or the ASPCA?
A. GCHS is an independent organization NOT affiliated with any other organization.
Have an idea? Have a comment or suggestion? Let us know!
Q. Does GCHS put animals down?
A. GCHS does not put animals down for space issues or disease. All animals are given a fair chance at a loving home.

Humane Education
Saying goodbye to a devoted companion is a very painful experience. Your loving animal now needs the same quality of care they received when alive.
The Gulf Coast Humane Society can offer comfort by providing cremation services for the friend that provided you with their unconditional love and acceptance. We offer a choice between group or individual cremation.
Communal or group cremation is when your pet is cremated with others. In this case, the ashes cannot be returned to you. Some people choose not to have the ashes returned. This is a less expensive alternative.
Individual cremation is when your pet is cremated separately, and the ashes (or remains) are returned to you in a small container. Some pet Guardians choose to keep the ashes indefinitely. You may wish to scatter the ashes in a special place. This is a personal choice that only you can make.
GCHS offers Humane Education to local private & public schools. Humane Education is the foundation to building character, empathy and compassion in our youth-in turn bulding a more sustainable community. This vital education is a mandatory part of public school education in 14 states.
Our Humane Education program teaches K- College and starts with basic pet care & responsible Guardianship, all the way up to the animal cruelty- human violence connection.

Public Education!
On January 15, 1945, a group of animal lovers led by Frances Weil filed a charter to form the Gulf Coast Humane Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. On March 22, 1947, the Society filed a charter amendment changing the name to Gulf Coast Humane Society, its corporate name until 1976, when it was amended to PAWS-Gulf Coast Humane Society. From its beginning, the men and women of the Society acted as humane officers for Nueces and the surrounding counties. In Corpus Christi, the Society members worked closely with the police officers assigned to humane duties and the City Pound. In 1947, the Society acquired a permanent home. They purchased 3.2 acres of land on Navigation Boulevard. It was through annual fund drives, rummage sales, charity balls, and similar efforts that the Society was able to pay off the land purchases and build a very fine kennel building. In 1997, the board of directors decided to revert back to the previous name of Gulf Coast Humane Society. In April 1998, the Society began operating from a new facility. The facility was made possible by the generous donation of Tom and Cora Keeler. The new facility is double the size of the Society's old home, allowing the organization to help more animals and offer expanded education and services to the public.
Adopt a New Friend! Back
In America, over 50 million stray dogs and cats are without homes.
Pet overpopulation has lead to many of these animals (around 4 million each year), being put down.
YOU CAN HELP!
Many of the animals euthanized each year are the offspring of family pets. Spaying and/or nuetering your pets helps to reduce pet overpopulation, and put a stop to euthanasia. Also, the more people adopt, the less homeles there will be.
